Happy Birthday RBC & 4th of July BBQ! July 4th 5 - 7pm All are welcome to join in the celebration of RBC's 30th anniversary and our nation's Independence Day! Please bring a salad or dessert and something to throw on the BBQ! We will have lawn games too! The Eikyoji Institute of America (originally located at 548 California Avenue) was established as a non-profit organization in 1989 by Alicia O. Matsunaga and Daigan L. Matsunaga with the wishes and dreams of Americans who wanted to see Buddhism take root in Nevada and offer the wisdom and practices of Buddhism to further benefit the country. They established Reno Buddhist Church as a Sangha of non-denominational Buddhists (although affiliated with Jodo Shinshu Pure Land denomination of Japanese Buddhism). In 1993, the EIA purchased the RBC Plumas St. property from the Lighthouse of God Church on November 29, 1993. The adjacent Shasta House was also purchased at this time along with the parking lot on the south side of Taylor St. The RBC congregation (or Sangha) is made up of folks from all walks of American life. We are American Buddhists. We will carpool up to Mt. Rose from RBC leaving at 9:00am. Please bring good walking shoes, sunscreen, sack lunch and water. The hike is a gentle 5 mile round trip. We will do a Forest Bathing session after the lunch break. We should be back to RBC about 3pm. Please join us for the day! Forest Bathing is a process of individual contemplative "soaking in" of the natural environment. After a period of guided meditation the group breaks up and each one finds a spot in the first to sit and just be. The Buddha and his students often used this method to rescenter and revitalize their practice. Sunday March 10th, 3-5pm "A PORTRAIT OF THE 14TH DALAI LAMA SINCE HIS EXILE FROM TIBET IN 1959." at Reno Buddhist Center, 820 Plumas St., Main Hall. FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC - Donations accepted - Presented in partnership with the Northern Nevada International Center. more Info [email protected] The movie depicts scenes of the Tibetans and the Dalai Lama going back to 1950 when the Chinese invaded the country, follows the Dalai Lama's visit with Chairman Mao, and his eventual escape into exile. His life in exile has been extraordinary and the question of whether there will be a 15th Dalai Lama is explored and unanswered in this film. The Dalai Lama himself has said he will not be reincarnated because he does not want the Chinese involved in choosing his successor. The future remains a mystery, but one thing is certain. This man exudes happiness and peace, in spite of the genocide of his people at the hands of the Chinese. We have a lot to learn from him. Dharma Snowshoe/ski outing Saturday, February 16th 9:30am - 2:30pm We will carpool to Mt. Rose leaving RBC at 9:30am. Please bring a sack lunch, water and warm clothing (hat, gloves, thick socks).
